Karakaya Dam and Hydroelectric Power Plant
The Karakaya Dam is a hydroelectric power plant built between 1976 and 1987 in order to supply electricity as part of the Southeastern Anatolia Project (GAP), built on the Euphrates River within the boundaries of the Çüngüş county of Diyarbakır province. Despite the fact that the construction of the dam resulted in the evacuation of many villages in the vicinity, it brought great benefits for the people of the region and for the economy of the country.
It is located in Karakaya Village near the name of hydroelectric power plant located 150 km away from Diyarbakır.
Concrete arch body weight type, the body volume of the dam is 2,000,000 m3, the height of the river bed is 173,00 meters, the volume of the lake in the normal water level is 9,580,00 hm3, the lake area in the normal water level is 268,00 km2. The dam produces 7.354 GWh of electricity per year at 1,800 MW.
